“Poignantly powerful evening” and “fully caught the spirit of the time” were just some of the comments received at the end of the musical evening in the village hall on Saturday 15 November 2014.
Part of Flintham Museum’s project ‘Keeping the Home Fires Burning?’, the evening echoed a concert in November 1914 put on to raise funds for Christmas parcels for the 16 Flintham lads who had gone to serve. A seventeenth had already died in the September, bringing home the very real possibility of men not returning.
In this 2014 version Flintham villagers were entertained by members of the Bingham Wind Band, Flintham Primary School choir, and a number of soloists playing, singing and reciting pieces from the era. The audience enthusiastically joined in with Danny Boy, Pack up your Troubles, Roses of Picardy, Rule Britannia and of course our signature tune Keep the Home Fires Burning. In the words of one member of the audience – “Excellent entertainment. Thanks!”
